Juliet Day, Understanding Plant Diversity Project Manager, Cambridge University Botanic Garden Juliet took a circuitous route into gardens and horticulture! A degree in Russian and Italian from Trinity Hall, Cambridge was followed by development and fundraising for The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. Gardening was already a growing interest but a year spent exploring the Americas persuaded her that on return to real life, gardens and horticulture needed to occupy a Monday-Friday role rather than be squeezed into the weekend. Juliet joined the Cambridge University Botanic Garden in 2000 to undertake the Certificate in Horticulture and Plantsmanship while also establishing and running the Development and Publicity office. This work has involved growing the annual visitor numbers from 80,000 to today’s 250,000+, developing the Garden’s communications in print and digital, and multi-channel fundraising across a broad spectrum of projects from re-landscaping to capital developments. Having successfully raised the funding for an ambitious project to revitalise the Garden’s unique Systematic Beds for teaching, research and enjoyment, Juliet has been seconded to Understanding Plant Diversity as project manager for three years until 2019.
