Back to presentations: Volunteers in Gardens and Arboreta
Kevin Reid began his career in private and public-sector forestry in Northern Ireland, before studying Countryside Management at the University of London and moving into large-estate management and tourism in England. In 1998, he started work for the National Trust as a Property Manager of Lyme Park, a 550-ha estate and country house with 392 volunteers. In 2001, he was Area Manager for 129 000 ha of the Lake District National Park – this coincided with the outbreak of foot and mouth disease and provided valuable experience in crisis management in the tourism industry. Kevin acted as a facilitator for One Trust, delivering a development and communication process for national management of behavioural change within the National Trust, from senior managers to grass-roots staff and volunteers. In July 2006, he was appointed director of Ness Botanic Gardens, University of Liverpool, with a remit of leading the Gardens through a critical phase of business and staff development. Kevin has recently been awarded an MBA by the University of Liverpool, which culminated in a case study for the creation of a sustainability model for university botanic gardens.
