Back to presentations: Volunteers in Gardens and Arboreta
Nicholas Wray is Curator at the University of Bristol Botanic Garden, where he has worked for 26 years. Between 2002 and 2005, he was co-responsible for successfully relocating and developing the Botanic Garden. The first new university botanic garden to be created in the United Kingdom for nearly 40 years, the 1.77-ha garden has been designed to Tell stories about plant evolution and is home to four core plant collections: (i) Evolution, (ii) Plants of Mediterranean Climate Collections, (iii) Useful Plants and (iv) Local Flora & Rare Native Plants. The Garden provides a teaching resource for plant sciences within the University of Bristol, a centre for adult education, a resource for local schools and a new cultural attraction for the City of Bristol. Nick is responsible for delivering the adult educational role of the Garden, supported by a small team of staff and a large team of volunteers. The volunteer guide scheme formed in 1994 delivers the Garden’s educational message to visiting groups of adults and children and fulfils an important ‘front of house’ role at exhibitions and educational venues, in the garden and across the City. The role of volunteer gardeners at the Botanic Garden will also be discussed.
