Wildflower meadow conservation training day

Wakehurst Place, Weds 13th July 2016

Wakehurst is the country estate of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Its varied landscape is of international significance for its beautiful botanic gardens, tree collections and natural habitats as well as for its science-based plant conservation and research. Wakehurst has a growing reputation for restoring, creating and managing species-rich wildflower meadows. In 2015 it started a new 5 hectare meadow creation project under the Coronation Meadow Scheme.

This is predominantly a field-based training day looking at the management of flower-rich meadows and the techniques used to establish new meadows or to enhance existing grasslands. Seed specification, sowing rates, site preparation, sowing, plug planting and conservation management, including grazing, will be considered.

This day will also review the science and practice of seed collecting, preservation, after-care and use including a demonstration of brush harvesting.

Lunch and resources included.

Facilitator: Iain Parkinson, Conservation Manager
