Join us to explore winter gardens – what they are, how they are created and maintained, and why they can enhance any designed landscape. We will have the opportunity to visit THREE highly regarded winter gardens over two days – from the long-established winter garden at Cambridge University Botanic Garden to the highly acclaimed winter garden and walk at the National Trust’s Anglesey Abbey and the relative newcomer at RHS Garden Hyde Hall.
Winter gardens demonstrate that gardens can provide interest all year round! Using brightly coloured bark, winter-flowering and often scented shrubs, evergreens with unusual leaves, late/early-flowering bulbs, and even sculpture and man-made features, winter gardens expand the season for many destination gardens and demonstrate the range of plants that are available for year-round interest. Winter gardens can also provide interest in other seasons and this multifunctionality lends itself particularly well to small gardens.
This two day event starts with a visit to Cambridge University Botanic Garden on the morning of 12 February (tour of winter garden at 11am to allow for travel but participants welcome to arrive for self-guided tour from 10am) with lunch at the garden before moving on to Anglesey Abbey for an afternoon tour. A tour of the winter garden at RHS Garden Hyde Hall starts the day on 13 February before moving on to a series of talks and discussion focusing on winter gardens, including a talk on the planting choices at the Sir Harold Hillier Gardens by Head of Collections, David Jewell.

Cost: £76 for PlantNetwork members, £60 for PlantNetwork students (limited tickets available) and between £80-£116 for non-members. Includes lunch at Cambridge University Botanic Garden on 12 February as well as lunch and all refreshments at RHS Garden Hyde Hall on 13 February. Please note that transport between the gardens is NOT included but lift-sharing options will be made available wherever possible – please indicate interest in lift-sharing at time of booking.
