Arboreta and Woodlands – Tree Forum at RHS Garden Rosemoor

The first PlantNetwork Tree Forum of 2019 was organised and hosted by the team at RHS Garden Rosemoor on Tuesday 4th June 2019.

RHS Garden Rosemoor has a great collection of trees, which the event fully utilised on a walk-around to evaluate different trees of garden merit which help to highlight seasons or themes within the plantings and garden rooms. The day also looked at the Rosemoor arboreta and discussed the concepts underlying the development of these sites, such as the Bicentenary Arboretum which is still in its infancy: here, the use of shrubs and herbaceous has really enhanced the plantings.

In the afternoon, attention switched to the Plantations on Ancient Woodland Sites which surround the garden. The garden team spoke about how they are managing and transforming the 120 acres owned by the RHS, highlighting tree care, tree health and the systems the garden has instigated.

The event provided an opportunity to:

  • Share skills on topics as diverse as trees for seasonal interest, trees in mixed plantings, arboreta and woodland.
  • Compare/contrast management of arboreta with woodland.
  • Discuss tree care, tree health and tree management with the RHS Garden Rosemoor team and colleagues from across PlantNetwork.

The programme for the day is available to download below.

As with all Tree Forum events, the focus was very much on skill sharing and networking to allow all involved to find out how other gardens manage their tree collections. If you would like to host an event, please contact the PlantNetwork Coordinator.
