Royal Horticultural Society School of Horticulture

Grow your career with the RHS

Last year the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), who have been offering work-based training programmes for almost 200 years, reported the highest rise in applications in decades, and so are increasing the number of places available this year. The application process opens on 01 December 2021.

The L3 & 4 Diploma in Horticultural Practice is a two-year, paid, work-based programme based at RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey, for those who already hold an existing Level 2 horticultural qualification.

Students rotate around the garden learning about all areas of ornamental horticulture gaining real industry insights alongside experienced and inspiring horticulturists. They develop supervisory skills, including an understanding of management practices, budgeting and communication skills.

There are other unique opportunities too, such as helping at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, designing and building a garden in the local community, garden visits, bursary opportunities, and managing your own allotment. Student accommodation is available at Wisley, so relocation is possible.

To hear first-hand what student life is like at the RHS, register for the free Zoom event on Thursday 13 January 2022, via this link: https://www.rhs.org.uk/education-learning/qualifications-and-training/work-based-training after 01 December.

The RHS also offer one-year Specialist Horticultural Placements to hone skills in a specialist horticultural area. For those new to horticulture, there are Level 2 Horticultural Operative Apprenticeships which require no experience or horticultural qualifications, just a passion for plants and nature.

Specialist Horticultural Placements and Apprentice positions are available across all five RHS gardens, including our new garden, RHS Bridgewater, which opened earlier this year.

If you are a PlantNetwork member, you will receive notification of the individual positions available in the weekly newsletter or via the ‘Recruitment Notices’ webpage.
