Mastering your next career step

– be quick applications are closing soon! Writes the RHS MHort team.

The MHort is the Royal Horticultural Society’s most prestigious award, designed for industry professionals who wish to grow their career in a flexible and affordable way.

The degree-level award is open to UK and international candidates who have at least four years’ full-time experience working in horticulture, with at least one year at supervisory level and an existing Level 3 qualification. Delivered mostly online over three years, the award gives those working in the industry the chance to hone their knowledge and skills at management level. Whatever your area of work, you will gain a solid grounding of basic concepts, as well as being able to specialise in your chosen area.

Susie Hauxwell, pictured above, is a Horticulturist at RHS Rosemoor and MHort candidate:

“I am currently working on the final unit in year two of the RHS Master of Horticulture.  When I started the programme, it had been around eight years since I had completed my last academic qualification.  I was a student on the then named Practical Certificate in Horticulture at RHS Rosemoor Garden.  I have been employed at Rosemoor ever since as a horticulturist.  It was with trepidation that I embarked on my MHort journey in 2018.

I am passionate about education.  I have always enjoyed learning and I need to learn to keep myself moving forward; there’s no better motivator to learn and to study than a deadline or an exam.  My main reason to study the MHort is to expand my knowledge, to gain new skills and to feed my brain; all very personal reasons.  Also, I hope in the future my MHort Award will give me scope to further my career, I can’t climb trees and crawl around weeding for the rest of my life!

This programme presents many challenges such as knowing when enough reading is enough and when I need to start the writing process, there is so much information out there to access.  I have found that once I start reading, I realise how very little I know.  I enjoy the moment I peek my head round the door of a subject and realise that there is a whole world inside to discover.

The MHort is a massive commitment, occupying headspace and taking up lots of time but it is immensely satisfying to bring together research and submit work that I’m proud of, especially when it’s rewarded with marks that reflect all the hours that I’ve put into it.  The content of the MHort puts my role at Rosemoor in to the wider context of the horticultural industry; it has broadened my depth of knowledge, revealing what a diverse and important industry I work in.”

Delivered online, support is provided throughout the programme from our expert tutors, and there are opportunities to meet fellow candidates through launch events and network with industry specialists, as well as join other annual events.  The award is designed to work around a full-time job and is affordable in comparison to other degree level programmes.

Applications close on 3rd August for an October 2020 start. If you want to take your horticultural career to the next level with the RHS then apply today!
