Postponed: Sourcing Healthy Trees

Date to be confirmed, Tree Health Centre, Yorkshire Arboretum

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, work has been delayed on the new Tree Health Centre at the Yorkshire Arboretum. As such, this event, which was due to take place on 10 November 2020, has been postponed until 2021. The postponed meeting, date to be confirmed, is likely to have a different programme and format. The text below relates to the cancelled 2020 event. We hope to run a webinar in late 2020 on tree health to celebrate the International Year of Plant Health.

Join the PlantNetwork Tree Forum for an event at the Tree Health Centre, Yorkshire Arboretum in North Yorkshire. As 2020 is the International Year of Plant Health, we will look at tree health issues including an update on the major threats to tree health, what problems we should be looking out for in our tree collections now and in the near future, and how to minimise the introduction of health issues by sourcing healthy trees. How should you assess incoming trees? We will discuss what to look for procuring new trees and the practicalities of biosecurity measures to ensure tree health.

The event is aimed at horticulturists who care for trees or have responsibilities for a tree collection. It will assume a good working knowledge of tree care and cultivation as well as common pests and diseases. There will be an opportunity to refresh understanding of common pest and disease problems as well as find out more about emerging pest and disease issues. New legislation will be addressed including plant passports. The focus, however, will be on the sourcing of new trees including health checks for trees arriving on site, quarantine measures and continuous assessment.

Speakers include Nicola Spence (Defra Chief Plant Health Officer), Jonathan Burton (Yorkshire Arboretum Collection Manager) and Barnaby Wylder (Tree Health Officer for the Forestry Commission) as well as speakers from the Animal and Plant Health Agency. The programme will be available shortly.
