Back to presentations: Managing and enhancing the visitor experience in botanic and historic gardens

Jon Wayte, National Parks Safety Officer

Ex-Royal Navy Submarine Service, these days I far prefer to spend as much time as possible outdoors. Happily, I now work for the Peak District National Park Authority where I can do just that. I hold the position of Safety Officer, helping to ensure that we fulfil all of our legal duties and properly look after all those that work for us and all those that use and visit the park. I am a long-term member of the Visitor Safety in the Countryside Group which has members from many large organisations including, Natural England, National Trust, RSPB, Forestry Commission, Environment Agency, Historic Scotland, National Trust for Scotland, The Royal Parks, Woodland Trust, English Heritage and Rivers and Canals Trust. Set up in 1997 the group looks at how to create and maintain safe access to the countryside in ways that neither spoil the landscape and heritage, nor lessen the visitor’s sense of exploration and adventure.
