Back to presentations: Managing and enhancing the visitor experience in botanic and historic gardens
Steve’s horticultural career began with three years at Ickworth in Suffolk on the National Trust’s Careership Scheme where he gained a great insight into most aspects of working in a historic garden as well as obtaining a National Diploma from Cannington College. Following this Steve moved to Cornwall to take up a gardener position at Glendurgan on the Helford River. At 23 he became the youngest National Trust Head Gardener and the first to progress through from the Careership. Having taken on extra responsibility as Assistant Property manager he moved to Chatsworth seven years ago. Steve’s current role encompasses the management of over 100 acres of garden and over 1000 acres of park and woodland, with a permanent team of almost 30 as well as various trainees and a growing team of volunteers. Alongside the day to day management he is involved with various larger projects including the implementation of a long term Park Management Plan and many new exciting garden developments.
