Julia Willison, Botanic Gardens Conservation International

Julia has worked in the environmental field for more than 20 years. Julia has created an international education network of over 500 botanic gardens, working closely with staff in gardens to support them in all aspects of education. This includes organising international education congresses, running training courses, producing educational resources and developing international education policy for the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation. Julia is currently co-coordinating a 3-year project, working with 17 partners in 11 countries, focusing on inquiry-based science education (IBSE). The project involves training educators in botanic gardens in IBSE and supporting each partner to develop a teacher training course that will help raise scientific literacy among students and engage them in science. She is also leading the programme entitled Communities in Nature: growing the social role of botanic gardens, which supports botanic gardens to engage with all members of their community.
