Topics for consideration at the meeting include the relationship of botanic gardens with the rest of the university, funding, teaching and research, other uses of the plant collections and responding to the wider community.

Many university botanic gardens have been going through a period of change over the past few years and continue to face challenges and opportunities. How are they responding while maintaining their purpose and status as botanic gardens. Kevin Reid, Director, and Paul Cook, Curator, at Ness Botanic Gardens, University of Liverpool, will host a timely day of discussion on some of the common issues pertinent to university gardens.

A recent research study has been completed at Ness in creating a ‘sustainability framework’ upon which to build a vision and define future development plans aimed at making Ness self-financing. The study will be published early in 2012 and made available to delegates.
