Parks and Gardens – Biosecurity Best Practice Protocols

Best Practice Protocols have been produced by The Food and Environment Research Agency (FERA) to provide helpful advice on the ‘biosecurity’ measures which can help to protect sites from pest and disease attack. One is for parks and gardens and the other for nurseries, retailers and landscapers. Although they have been written primarily for the control of two species of Phytophthora, P. ramorum and P. kernoviae, the measures offer protection generically across all plant pests and diseases.

The protocols were drafted by a small team of plant scientists at FERA and a Working Group of professional stakeholders, including PlantNetwork.  They are available here

The protocols include sections on:

  • Sourcing Plants
  • Handling Plants On Arrival
  • Quarantine Areas
  • Design & Layout
  • Risk Assessment And Monitoring
  • Husbandry
  • Hygiene
  • Water Management
  • Disposal Of Plant Waste
  • Staff Training
  • Visitors
  • On-Site Contractors
  • Outbreak Situations
  • Plant Passports
  • Biosecurity Poster
